Tell me friend: are you trying to figure out exactly what it looks like to run an impactful business AND be a good, present mom at the same time? If that sounds like you, I hope this post gives you some ideas and inspiration of how I have made it work in my own life.
99% of my clients are mamas and/or work with them.
Mama, if you own a business, you know what it’s like to be seeking that ever elusive “balance”. You’ve got double the tasks, and half the time. (Or so it seems).
Now, I haven’t been a mama for long, about a year and a half. But I have gone through some ups and down and found a few things that changed my days from a flurry of stress >> alignment and flow.
No, you don’t need a 10 step morning routine. But daily, weekly and seasonal rhythms help you stay in flow with work and mom life.
I love to add what I call “luxury rituals” into my daily rhythm whenever possibly. This simply means taking an extra 2 minutes to do something that really sets the tone for me at home. This can look like lighting sage or turning on a diffuser. Spending 30 seconds to foam the milk for my coffee. Or listening to a short affirmation audio when I transition from mom to work (aka, nap time.)
More than that, what does your weekly flow look like? Maybe you take all of your client calls on Tuesday & Thursday, so you know you’ll need a few more activities to keep the kids occupied on those days. Or every Friday morning you go to the library and park, which means you take it easy with work (& your clients know this). The amazing things is, YOU get to decide what your rhythms and flows look like, in business and motherhood. So make it a rhythm you actually enjoy.
This one isn’t going to be an overnight fix, but if you can start to encourage independent play (even with your newborn) it’s so helpful in having some time to work while your kid(s) are awake. I’m not a parenting expert but I love the Montessori and Respectful Parenting approaches to independent play with kids.
After we spend quality time together in the morning, Freyja is usually happy to play alone for 30-45 minutes while I get some work done. This is simply because it’s always been a part of her routine (going back to #1) and I’ve encouraged her to play alone and really get engrossed in activities.
The Mellow Mama on YouTube and Montessori in Real Life are some of my favorite resources to learn more about this. And it may only look like 5 or 10 minutes for your little one right now. But keep encouraging it, and you’ll find yourself with more pockets of time throughout the day for work.
When you’re balancing mom life & work life, you no longer have the luxury of working on little things here and there all. day. long. (I honestly don’t even know how I used to fill up an entire day with work tasks?)
You’re the CEO. You need to work on your business (think big picture tasks) not in your business (ie. menial work or time wasting tasks). What things are actually moving the needle? What can be outsourced? What can be cut altogether? You don’t have time to do all.the.things. so focus on what matters, big picture style.
For me this looked like outsourcing a few things:
But more so, it meant looking at everything I did in a day and only focusing on big picture projects that got me closer to my big vision goals. When you have 30-min. pockets of time to work, it has to be on the important stuff!
Those are just a few of the things that help me find flow between motherhood and entrepreneurship! It’s an ever evolving relationship, as Freyja gets older and my business changes as well. And your balance might look totally different from mine! More than anything, focus on finding what feel aligned and right for YOU in YOUR stage right now.
